What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. The search for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the key to defeating him for good.
Spoiler Warning: This discussion details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
A Journey Into the Cavern
When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a fight for life.
In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
So, What's in the Case?
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container most likely held vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
