Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in the country and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
