The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
