The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
