The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back home,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
