The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
