The Duke of York relinquishes his honor as York's Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has encountered mounting scrutiny over his connections with the financier.

Prince Andrew is giving up his titles, including the the Duke, he has announced in a individual message.

He has been under mounting attention over his associations with convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the Palace to take steps against him.

That now looks to have caused the prince deciding to of his own accord hand back his honors and to relinquish involvement of the prestigious order.

In his announcement he said he continued to "firmly refute the accusations against me".

"In talks with the monarch, and my close and broader family, we have decided the ongoing accusations about me take away from the duties of the monarch and the monarchy," said a statement from him.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my kin and country first.

"I support my choice five years ago to withdraw from public life.

"With the monarch's approval, we think I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the distinctions which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I firmly refute the allegations against me."

Prince Andrew has faced a number of scandals, including a court case he ended with Virginia Giuffre, questions about his finances and his connection with an accused foreign agent.

He will continue to be a royal - but will stop to be the Duke of York, a honor received from his the late Queen, the late Queen Elizabeth.

He had already ceased to be a "participating figure" and had lost the use of his HRH title and no longer participated at public engagements. His role now will be even more lessened.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer York's Duchess, but their offspring will persist to have the title of princess.

The royal has faced intense examination over his connections with convicted sex offender the financier, more in recent times involving doubts about when he had actually severed contact.

In his media discussion, Prince Andrew had said that he had severed all links with Jeffrey Epstein after they had been seen together in NYC in late 2010.

But correspondence sent in February 2011 later emerged indicating that he had in private continued in touch with the financier, such as swapping a message: "Stay in contact and we'll have further interactions soon!"

There had been mounting displeasure in Buckingham Palace at the issues that continued to plague the royal.

Soon a posthumous memoir by the accuser will be issued which is anticipated to draw additional attention on Prince Andrew's association with Ms Giuffre and Jeffrey Epstein.
