The direst projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C jump in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility envisions a drop of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy demand.
Possible Extremes, Not Forecasts
These impacts, certain ones are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as improbable but credible. The researchers explained that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented the lead researcher who led the study. "Britain has been formulating policy in the absence of the tools to assess extreme possibilities. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for future conditions they pray never occur, but dare not dismiss."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Possibilities
A further series of dire projections sets out the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the end of the century. These suggest that thermometer readings could rocket in some months by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will respond. This research was described as similar to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for financial systems.

- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if climate action breaks down or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin dying release its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Farming would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be completely altered," noted the professor.
- Sudden Ocean Inundation: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica melt abruptly, inundating coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by coastal engineers.
