Severe Rains Exacerbate Conditions for Displaced Gazans, Agencies Alert
Persistent rains over the last seven days have compounded the already dire situation of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to humanitarian agencies.
"Horrendous" Conditions Brings Grave Threats
A spokesman detailed the weather overnight as "terrible", with precipitation so severe that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the terrain.
"The recent weather was really horrendous for the families. The storms were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," stated the official.
There is significant concern that minors living in tents in wet clothing will contract hypothermia and various ailments.
Deaths and Widespread Damage
Health authorities have reported that one baby has died from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the storms.
Further statements put a greater death toll. Authorities said that multiple structures had fully given way and scores had collapsed partially.
- Almost 55,000 families harmed by rains.
- More than 40 emergency refuges inundated.
- Countless residents compelled to move once more.
Aid Operations Seen as Insufficient
Agencies have increased distribution of shelter, warm covers and clothing since the halt in hostilities started, but they stress there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are striving constantly to provide that relief and to distribute it, but the scale of the requirements is so enormous that we continue to see thousands of families and minors who are truly suffering each evening," stated one official.
Long-Term Challenges and Truce Provisions
The next stage of the ceasefire includes plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the pullback of troops, and other conditions.
Aid bodies have underscored the necessity for "expanded and ongoing relief to respond to pressing and future requirements."
The war was sparked by an offensive in October 2023. Subsequent campaigns have resulted in a substantial number of casualties in the area, according to health ministry figures.
