New York Unveils Portal for Public to Submit ICE Footage Following Detentions of Four American Citizens
New York state AG has introduced a fresh reporting form urging locals to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This step follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale outcry.
US Citizens Held In Enforcement Action
A US congressman announced during a midweek briefing that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Protests erupted in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a release.
"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are pledged to examining these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The platform includes fields to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a area to indicate where it occurred. Before submitting, submitters must tick a box that states that "the office might employ any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The enforcement action, which onlookers say included dozens of government officers, took place in a well-known neighborhood of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are regularly available in large quantities – often to tourists.
Footage of the operation reveal numerous hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside witnesses. Throngs of residents followed the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He noted the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is simply a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to utilize the military to prevent unrest that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, as did NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the current administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a contender stated.
The city's advocacy organizations spoke out as well.
"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and riot gear to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to community security and was entirely about frightening communities and neighborhoods," said the president of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has stated it does not arrest or detain American nationals. However, external research has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the existing leadership.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide lately.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the current administration. Demonstrations against federal operations are ubiquitous along with allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a submission filed by legal entities stated medical neglect of women with child in government custody.
