New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how important this election is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
