Israelis commemorate second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
People have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still were held around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source explained the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that mediators are striving to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis prefer the conflict to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the captives.

"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
