Child of Ex- South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Allegations as Trial Begins
The offspring of ex- South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over statements she posted on online platforms in the past during violent protests in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her father.
A week of disorder in various areas of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 dead and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been accused of fuelling this violence and is charged with allegations of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence.
History of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the previous president's apprehension for ignoring a judicial ruling to give evidence at an investigation into claims of graft while he was serving as president.
The defendant has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her attorney previously describing the government's case as weak.
She has also frequently said the accusations against her were an attempt to resolve political scores with her parent after he established his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship persecution" against the ex-leader and his relatives.
A few of supporters from her group, the political party, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.
The defense has argued that the evidence presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks concrete evidence for a criminal finding.
