Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded offerings could be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Auction

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders on official trips. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents reportedly locked away in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.

The detailed catalog remains officially released, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being followed. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Political Context

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to deal with the state presents that are collected during a political career.
